Nyeri hosts national fete as Kenya marks 54 years of self-rule

NYERI, Kenya, Jun 1 – Kenyans on Thursday marked 54 years of internal self-rule at a national fete held in Nyeri.

According to Capital FM News reporter John Gathua, thousands thronged the Kabiruini ASK grounds to join in the celebrations with 30,000 having been expected to attend the heavily guarded ceremony.

Both President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto and their spouses attended the ceremony a day after launching the Madaraka Express, the official inaugural train to traverse Mombasa to Nairobi on the Standard Gauge Railway.
