MACHAKOS, Kenya, Jun 1 – Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to seek re-election.
Mutua who presented his papers at the Machakos county IEBC offices, was cleared by the Returning Officer Joyce Wamalwa.
He will run on his Maendeleo Chap Chap party ticket.
Present was his running mate Engineer Francis Maliti.
Mutua dropped his former deputy Bernard Kiala who is running for the seat as an independent.
Addressing journalists after being cleared, Mutua pledged to conduct peaceful campaigns and urged his opponent to also do so.
“I have committed myself to peaceful campaigns. There will always be a winner and a loser, “said Mutua.
He added elections were not a matter of life and death and urged all aspirants to allow their opponents to sell their manifesto to the electorate.
Mutua vowed to vanquish his main challenger, Wiper’s Wavinya Ndeti, and warned her to brace for a bruising battle.
“I beat her squarely in 2013 and this time round it will be bad for her. I will trounce her by over seventy percent of the votes,” said Mutua.
Business in Machakos town came to a standstill as Mutua’s convoy – escorted by hundreds of boda boda riders – snaked through the streets.
Mutua who addressed impromptu rallies urged the electorate to re-elect him on the basis of his development track record.
He said leaders should be elected on the basis of their scorecard and not empty rhetoric.
