NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 29 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will on Thursday open up the voters register for inspection by the public.
According to the electoral body, the inspection will go on until the August polls and will be done online and via SMS.
The final number of voters now stands at 19.6 million, after the Commission expunged over 80,000 records of deceased persons from the register.
Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati had said the number includes about 10,000 records of Diaspora voters and those in prisons.
He noted that the figure of perceived dead voters had been revised by the KPMG audit firm from an initial of 92,277 to 88,602 after it emerged that the number could have been higher due to inaccurate reports of deaths.
Chebukati exuded confidence in the Kenya Integrated Elections Management System (KIEMS) – the technology deployed by the commission for use on August 8 polls – saying “it provides foolproof authentication on Election Day and there will be no room for mischief.”
He said the 19.6 million represent 53 percent and 47pc of male and female voters in the register respectively.
Youths aged between 18-35 years account for 51 per cent of the total number of the electorate.
According to the commission there are 40,883 polling stations identified to serve “not more than 700 voters each” on the polling day.
Nairobi County has the highest number of voters standing at 2,250,853 followed by Kiambu (1,180,920) and Nakuru (949,618).
Another eight counties have over half a million voters joining the league of vote-rich counties.
