NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 14 – The Ministry of Education has announced the constitution of new University Councils for 22 public institutions following the expiry of the tenure of existing councils.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi Tuesday named Timothy Mwangi Kiruhi as the new chair of Council for the University of Nairobi (UoN), replacing Idle Farah whose 12 year reign at the helm came to an end in February.

Jeremiah Ntoloi will take over the leadership of Moi University Council while Shem Mogot assumes leadership of the Kenyatta University Council.

Jane Nyakang’o has been appointed to chair Dedan Kimathi University of Technology Council, Morompi Ole-Ronkei (Taita Taveta University), Musangi Jane Mutua (Pwani University), Kevit Desai (Technical University of Mombasa), Halima Saado Abdillahi (Technical University of Kenya), Ephraim Amiani Mukisira (Kisii University) and David Ojakaa (University of Eldoret).

Also appointed are Julius Tangus Rotich (Chuka University), Jeremy Bundi (Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology), Samuel Ochola (Maasai Mara University), Walter Ongeti (Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology) and Ben Chumo (Egerton University).

The announcement by Matiangi comes a day after lecturers in public universities signed the 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) ending a strike that last 54 days.

Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary General Constantine Wasonga called off the 54-day strike Monday, after the government through the Inter Public Universities Consultative Council Forum (IPUCCF) awarded lecturers a 17.5 and 3.9 per cent increment on basic salary and house allowances respectively.

Wasonga also said that a return-to-work formula had been signed between the IPUCCF and the UASU shielding lecturers from any disciplinary action due to their involvement in the industrial action.

Among tasks the new councils may be embarking upon once they commence their tenure include issuing guidance on the state on the January-April semester which has been significantly affected by the strike with university council requiring students to attend at least seventy percent of their lectures for them to sit for exams in a given semester.
