Ruto said Opposition leaders were busy manufacturing unnecessary excuses to derail the work of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission/DPPS
NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 11 – Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday said the Opposition was in a state of panic after sensing defeat ahead of the August elections.
Ruto said Opposition leaders were busy manufacturing unnecessary excuses to derail the work of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking in Oloitoktok, Kitengela, Isinya, Rongai and Kimana towns, in Kajiado County during a voter registration drive, the Deputy President said Cord leaders had resorted to threatening IEBC staff.
“Our opponents have sensed defeat and now they are manufacturing all manner of excuses to derail the IEBC from smoothly doing its work,” he said.
He said despite a mutual agreement between the government and the opposition to reform the commission, CORD leaders had changed goalposts and were making other outrageous demands.
He said although the Government had agreed to all reforms required for a free, fair and credible elections, the opposition was now erecting roadblocks to the polls.
“They now want to replace junior staff at IEBC with their relatives and friends. How can elections only be conducted by the people they want? Will that be fair? We want neutral people as is the case.”
He told the opposition to stop threatening commission staff with a hope of tilting scales in their favor.
The Deputy President who was accompanied by MPS Katoo ole Metito, ODM’s Mohamed Elmi, Peter Mositet, Moses ole Sakuda, Peris Tobiko, Mary Seneta, Yusuf Hassan, and former Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku urged residents in the area to support Jubilee so that they become part of the dependable team that is motivated by a desire to develop the country.
Ruto said the opposition thrived in lies and propaganda.
The Deputy President said Jubilee was focused on development citing the upgrading and equipping of Oloitoktok and Kajiado to hospitals.
He said the government had also connected electricity to 165,000 households in the county up from 91,000 in 2013.
To address the problem of water shortage in the area, the Deputy President said Kajiado Water Rural Project would undertake construction of 40 boreholes.
He said another water project for the area, which had been delayed because of a court case, had been resolved and work on the project would soon begin.
He said by registering as voters Kenyans will have a direct say in determining their future by electing leaders they felt would cater for their welfare.
“The only way for Kenyans to ensure development conscious leaders are elected in August is by registering as voters. This will enable you take part in shaping the future of this nation,” said Ruto.
Metito said the Maasai community has benefited from the government’s development projects and urged voters in the area to support Jubilee.
“The Maasai community is grateful to the development projects that have been initiated by Jubilee as in the sectors of energy, water, education and infrastructure among others,” Metito stated.
