, NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 2 – Former adviser to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Kilemi Mwiria, has defected from the Jubilee Party to Dr Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap.

The former Education Assistant Minister defected Thursday morning at the party headquarters in Lavington and was received by the leader who is the Governor of Machakos County.

“I want to thank you Dr Mutua for accepting and welcoming me in your party, Maendeleo Chap Chap. I would also like to thank President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto for giving me the opportunity to work as the Senior advisor of Education,” he said.

“I would also like to thank Meru residents especially those who voted for me in 2013. I will come back to you and ask for your votes again this year and I know this time round, I will be victorious. Long live Maendeleo Chap Chap, Long Live the people of Meru and Machakos and the people of Kenya.”

It is understood that Mwiria’s defection was informed by the fact that he stands slim or no chances at all of getting Jubilee’s nomination due to Kiraitu Murungi’s influence.

“I would like to take this opportunity to also thank his Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto for offering me the privilege to serve them as a senior education advisor for the last four years. It is my belief that the President and his Deputy will win a second term in office. I want to assure them that MC and I will do all we can to support their re-election bid,” Mwiria stated.

Murungi has also expressed interest to unseat Peter Munya as Meru Governor in what is shaping out to be a tough race.
Mutua welcomed Mwiria to the party saying that he has a lot to offer to the people in Meru.

“Maendeleo Chap Chap is a progressive and democratic party that focuses on speedy and life changing development that our people have been waiting for, for many years. To us, the people and development come first, second and third,” he stated.

He stated that Kenyans are tired of leaders engaging in empty rhetoric and divisive politics.

“Some of us have shown that it is possible to change lives with Maendeleo Chap Chap. I have known Dr Kilemi Mwiria for many years. We served together with Ambassador (Francis) Muthaura in Mwai Kibaki’s government. He is a straightforward, honest, brilliant and an action person,” he stated.

He described Mwiria as a leader who was keen in transforming the lives of Kenyans.

“He is a man of the people, humble, and focused on changing lives. That is why, besides being our candidate for the seat of Governor of Meru, he will also serve as one of the senior leaders of Maendeleo Chap Chap,” he stated.

He expressed hope that the Meru gubernatorial candidate will change the face of the county and contribute to Kenya’s development.

“We have no doubt that Dr Kilemi Mwiria will change the face of Meru and contribute to the development of our country. Like myself and Maendeleo Chap Chap, we support Uhuru Kenyatta and I request the people of Meru to support us.”

Mutua further announced that the Maendeleo Chap Chap will be fielding candidates in all counties for all elective positions including Governors, Senators, Woman Reps, Members of the National Assembly and MCAs.

He however pointed out that no one in the party will be vying for post of President.

“We are inviting all aspirants, from Meru and every corner of Kenya to join Maendeleo Chap Chap – a fair and Democratic Party that will support you. Wananchi want Maendeleo and we are the party for real and speedy Maendeleo. Karibuni Maendeleo Chap Chap. Njoo ujipange kabla hujapangwa.”
