, NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 24 – A security operation was launched in Wajir Saturday after suspected Al Shabaab militants killed two people in an attack at a communication mast in Tarbaj area.

North Eastern Regional Coordinator Mohamed Saleh indicated that reinforcements had been sent to the area to pursue the attackers.

He explained that the militants used improvised explosives to launch the attack before killing two people who resided there.

“They attacked a mast that is in a remote area and harassed locals. We are yet to get more information because the area is far but officers have been sent there,” he said.

Saleh further stated that they have mapped all masts in the area with an aim of deploying officers to protect them.

He revealed that this is the third mast to be destroyed by the terrorists in the area in less than a month.

He stated that other masts had been destroyed in Mandera in similar attacks three weeks ago.

He said the attackers take advantage of the remoteness of the targeted places to strike.

On Friday, security was beefed up in Kwale following an attack in which one assailant was killed early Friday morning.
