NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 6 – A suspected gangster was on Tuesday killed and six firearms recovered during a security operation in Bungoma.

The suspect was gunned down at a sugarcane plantation but police said three other suspects managed to escape.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet told Capital FM News beat that they have confirmed all the six guns were part of the seven G3 rifles stolen from Booker Police post in Mumias.

The first firearm loaded with 20 rounds of ammunitions was recovered at the weekend near a sugarcane farm in Mayoni market.

A police officer was injured during the attack that led to a security operation heavily criticised by human rights organisations for brutalising residents.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is already investigating the accusations.

The authority has since dispatched investigators to the ground where they are interviewing residents, victims and police officers themselves over the claims.

Area residents have accused police officers of brutalising them during the search to recover firearms and ammunition stolen last week from Booker Police Post.

Boinnet has since ordered investigations into complaints of excesses by police during the recovery operation.

“Any member of public, violated or ill-treated in any manner, is asked to lodge official complaint for purposes of investigations. Any police officer found culpable will face severe disciplinary action including arraignment in court and dismissal from the service,” he warned.

Rights group, the Independent Medico Legal Unit has also launched a private probe with a motive to bring to book culpable officers.
