, NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 23 – Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel was on Wednesday released on a Sh100,000 cash bail after facing charges for alleged assault.

Lempurkel who was arrested on Tuesday was charged with assaulting fellow Member of Parliament Sarah Korere on November 21.

“Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime on November 21, at Harambee House wilfully and unlawfully assaulted Sarah Korere by slapping her on the left cheek and kicked her in the lower abdomen thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm,” the charges read.

He denied the claims and objected to taking a plea on the grounds that it was he who was the victim and argued therefore that the charge was instituted in bad faith.

Principal Magistrate Joyce Gandani however dismissed the objection and directed that he plead to the charge for the reason that he could raise his contentions in the course of trial.

Lempurkel and Korere were reported to have exchanged blows at the Ministry of Interior offices on Monday in a physical manifestation of their fight for the Laikipia North Parliamentary seat in the coming General Election.
