Hate mongers put on notice ahead of electioneering period/FILE
NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 13 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has warned politicians against spreading hatred among Kenyans ahead of next year’s General Election and instead debate on real issues.
In a statement State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu said those found committing the offence will be brought to book.
“The President has been emphasizing that politicians must watch their tongues,” he cautioned. “Incitement in this season is the last thing we want.”
He revealed that the President has asked law enforcement agencies to act firmly on those who will be found spreading hate speech.
Esipisu said the government will do everything to ensure the country does not slide back to its dark days during the 2007-2008 post election violence due to political differences.
“We have been on this road before and we do not want to return there. There will be a robust response in terms of safeguarding our peace and stability and in terms of ensuring that hate mongers and hate speech experts do not bring their expertise to diving Kenyans and bringing them to conflict,” he asserted.
Deputy President William Ruto separately has also cautioned political leaders against inciting Kenyans ahead of next year’s General Election and instead they should debate on real issues.
“Those who use violence to advance their politics do not deserve to lead this country,” he said. “I urge my fellow politicians to stop politics of hatred and insults.”
