, NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 21 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Selection Panel is set to conduct interviews for the recruitment of the new IEBC Chairperson and Commissioners from mid next month and forward successful nominees to President Uhuru Kenyatta on November 30.

Speaking after the chairing the panel’s inaugural meeting, Chairperson Bernadette Musundi said they expect to kick off the process of replacing outgoing Chairman Isaack Hassan and his team on Monday when they publish the invitations for applications in the Kenya Gazette and media.

“This advertisement will also invite the views of the public on the suitability of the shortlisted candidates for a period of seven days. The panel expects to conduct interviews of the shortlisted candidates in public between 22-26, November 2016. It however needs to be noted that the interview dates could vary depending on the number of applicants received and the number of persons shortlisted.”

Musundi said they are confident of achieving their ambitious work plan.

“The Selection Panel further reiterates that the timelines it has provided are provisional and ambitious but are also achievable. The panel further recognises the responsibility it bears on behalf of Kenyans and affirms its commitment to see all timelines achieved,” said Musundi.

“The Selection Panel calls upon all person who have a role to play in the process that will culminate in the appointment of Commissioners to the IEBC to play their respective roles expeditiously.”

After conducting interviews, the Selection Panel shall select two persons qualified to be appointed as IEBC Chairperson and nine persons qualified to be appointed as members of the electoral body and shall forward the names to President Kenyatta for nomination of one person for appointment as the Chairperson and six persons for appointment as members.

President Kenyatta shall, within seven days of receipt of the names forward the list of nominees to the National Assembly for approval in accordance with the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act.

He shall, within seven days of receipt of the names approved by the National Assembly, by notice in the Gazette, appoint the Chairperson and the members of the Commission.

The Selection Panel shall stand dissolved upon the requisite appointments being made.
