The National Assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee has recommended the appointment of Lady Justice Philomena Mbete Mwilu to the office of Deputy Chief Justice to replace Kalpana Rawal who retired upon attaining the constitutional age of 70 years.

Committee chairperson Samuel Chepkonga submitted the committee report to the National Assembly which found her suitable to hold office.

Mwilu had to fight off a petition filed by Kandara MP Alice Wahome who alleged that she failed to conclude an election petition case and also failed to disqualify herself from the case and that she had taken a bribe.

She beat 15 other candidates to emerge victorious in the search.

The judge graduated from the University of Nairobi and was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1984.

She has also served in the Commercial Division in Nairobi, at the Eldoret High Court and the Civil Appeals sub-division of the High Court, the murder section of the Criminal Division and later headed the Environment and Land Division of the High Court.
