MACHAKOS, Kenya, Oct 6 – Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has declared the County pothole free after three weeks of sealing them in all key roads in within the County.

Mutua who spoke to journalists on Thursday , when he witnessed the patching up of the last pothole on Machakos – Kangundo road near Mutituni town, said that the county has set up a system that will ensure all roads are in good state.

”I want to assure motorists using roads in the county that the era of potholes is gone,” the Governor said. “We as a people are good at constructing new roads but very bad at maintaining. This is what I want to change in Machakos.”

He added “A pothole starts at the size of a coin, it is neglected and it grows to the size of a shoe, a wheelbarrow, a car and before you know it, you need to construct a new road.”

Mutua assured that a pothole on tarmac roads will not be allowed to last for more than 36 hours.

The Governor also announced a short code number 22502 to be used by members of the public to report any pothole that lasts for more than 36 hours so that he can “fire someone for sleeping on the job.”

” Wananchi can send a message to 22502 with details of the road and location of a pothole,” he said.

He said that the road repair and maintenance program is part of the Maendeleo Chap Chap ideology saying the County was constructing 10 new tarmac roads.

At the same time Mutua assured the Kathiani -Kakuyuni –Kangundo road which is being tarmacked by the County Government that it will soon be complete.

It is currently 60 percent complete.
