MACHAKOS, Kenya, Oct 12 – Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has unveiled a comprehensive food sustainability program that will enhance agricultural production in the county.

The program will see farmers across Machakos get free seeds, fertilizer and tractors to plough their land ahead of the planting season.

Mutua said farmers will also receive chicks to enhance poultry farming.

Mutua who spoke at Vyulya Market in Mwala Sub County where he distributed seeds to farmers said he was committed to widening the agriculture base and raising the yield of the people of Machakos.

He said that for a long time Machakos and Ukambani region has suffered the shame of being given food relief due to poor agricultural policies.

“Many leaders have campaigned by providing bags of donated food to their starving constituents and then complain about failed rains without offering any solutions,” said Mutua.

He distributed 28,000 kilograms of maize, 17,394 Kgs of beans, 1,878 Kgs of cowpeas and 8,718 Kgs of green grams (ndengu) to the farmers.

“Our program of providing free chicks to farmers is ongoing and a great success.
Our 40 tractors have been ploughing farms free of charge especially those of lower income earners, so as to increase the amount of land
under cultivation,” said Mutua.

He said the shame of food relief will not be removed by empty rhetoric or political sycophancy but through a “Maendeleo Chap Chap program” that focuses on the public.

Mutua said some countries in the world receive less rainfall than Machakos but because they have better agricultural policies and resources, they produce enough food and actually donate the surplus food to us.

“The reality is that hunger and lack of food is a factor of poverty. We must fight poverty by being self sustaining in food production,” said Mutua.

He said he was pleased to continue the provision of planting seeds to farmers as we approach the planing season.

“These seeds will be distributed to persons identified in all villages in the county. I urge all the farmers to utilize them well so that they have a bumper harvest,” said Mutua.

He said his government commits to purchase or get markets for all the bags of ndegu harvested as a result of these free seeds or other seeds planted by farmers.

“The idea is to transform farming efforts to cash so as to improve the quality of life for my people. My government will also be providing subsidized fertilizer so as to increase our yield,’ said Mutua

Mutua said a section of politicians afraid of his politics of development get scared and engage in propaganda about his programs which he said are aimed at transforming the lives of his people.

“Let the talkers talk. Talk is cheap and I will continue serving my people,” said Mutua.
