NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 24 – The Assembly of State Parties (ASP) President Sidiki Kaba will on Monday afternoon respond to the notifications of withdrawal from the Rome Statute issued by South Africa and Burundi last week.

Kaba who will address the media from Dakar in Senegal is expected to plead with the two countries to retract their notifications.

He has expressed concerns that the withdrawal by the two countries is likely to lead to mass withdrawals by other member States especially those in Africa.

“President Kaba regrets these decisions and has invited South Africa and Burundi to reconsider their positions.

Furthermore, the President of the Assembly is concerned that these disturbing events could pave way for other African States Parties to withdraw from the Rome Statute system,” a statement read.

South Africa’s decision to quit ICC follows an announcement by Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza who on Tuesday signed a law making Burundi the first country to file its withdrawal from The Hague based Court.

Kenya is another country that has threatened to quit ICC over similar claims of selective justice as well as dishonourable investigations into the 2008 Post Election Violence.

In 2013, Kenya’s National Assembly passed a motion to withdraw from the Rome Statute.
