KISUMU, Kenya, Oct 11 – Ahero Girls High School in Nyando sub-County has been closed indefinitely after students went on the rampage on Monday night.

The students were protesting against the interdiction of their principal who is alleged to have embezzled funds.

Nyando MP Fred Outa who visited the school was roughed up by the security personnel who had accompanied government officers to the school.

This is the third interdiction of the principal, after the Teachers Service Commission reversed two earlier interdictions.

One of the School Board of Management members Innocent Masara criticized the closure of the school without the involvement of the Board members.

Masara says form four students are preparing to sit their national examinations and the closure will have adverse effects on their performance.

“It’s a crisis. There is no learning going on and right now it’s a crucial time when our children are preparing for exams and what worries me most the County education offices are aware of this,” Masara said.

He called upon the county leadership to step in and address the crisis at the school.

Masara further calls for the disbandment of the school board and bring in people who have education of the children at heart.

“Why are we allowing strangers like DC Nyando sub-County to bulldoze. Let board dissolve and have people who have interest of the school run it.”
