NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 1 – Two of the three former Nyeri County executives who were jailed after failing to raise Sh24 million in fines have been released from the King’ong’o Maximum Prison.

Simon Wachira who was the Chief of Staff and John Maina in the Lands and Physical Planning Department were released after their families, colleagues and friends paid a fine of Sh7.9 million for each.

Martin Wamwea (Finance) was unable to raise the cash and was forced to remain behind the prison walls until he pays the fine. He faces three years in prison.

The officer in charge of King’ong’o Prison, Patrick Arandu confirmed the release of the two.

The three had been charged with six counts of failing to comply with procurement laws and funds management procedures as well as abuse of office.

They have already appealed against the ruling.
