Somalia miraa flights resume Wednesday after Uhuru, Mohamoud talks

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 13 – Flights transporting miraa from Kenya to Somalia will resume on Wednesday.

The agreement was reached at a meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud in Mogadishu on Tuesday.

The flights were suspended last week after purported controversial remarks by Meru Governor Peter Munya.

President Kenyatta, who is the first Kenyan Head of State to visit Mogadishu in 30 years also secured an agreement for Kenya Commercial Bank to open an office in Mogadishu.

Earlier on Tuesday the Meru Parliamentary Group lead by Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi, Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi, Igembe Central MP Kubai Kiringo and Igembe North MP Joseph M’Eruaki had appealed to the President to plead with the Somali Government to lift the ban.

They said miraa farmers had suffered greatly after losing half of its market which is in Somalia.
