NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 2 – Nyeri County Assembly Members have passed a motion to impeach Governor Nderitu Gachagua.

The motion was overwhelmingly passed on Friday by 32 members against 12 who were absent.

“I am happy because the MCAs have displayed unity and we have succeeded in impeaching the Governor,” Majority leader Duncan Gituanja said. “We want to help our people get rid of bad leadership.”

The MCAs accuse Gachagua of misappropriating the County Government funds at the expense of development.

The MCAs spent Thursday night at the assembly to ensure they are not divided in the Friday vote.

“We united and said we will sleep here because anything can happen to any of us or the majority leader,” one MCA said outside the assembly on Friday morning.

Other MCA interviewed said they hoped the impeachment will be upheld by the Senate once it is forwarded there.
The motion mover and Kiganjo Mathari Ward MCA, Baragu Mutahi said “The governor has failed to manage county resources to ensure that the people are benefiting, he must go home,” he said.

But Governor Gachagua insists the MCAs are not justified in his ouster bid, saying he has always served the Nyeri people with dedication.

Previous attempts by MCAs in Embu, Kericho among other counties to impeach their governors were unsuccessful after being thrown out at the senate.
