NAIROBI, Kenya Sep 25 – At least four people died and several others injured on Sunday in an accident involving a Rongai-bound matatu which overturned on Lang’ata Road.

Police and witnesses said the accident occurred when a bus from Rongai overturned near Lang’ata Police station on the way to the city centre.

“Four passengers have died in the accident,” Leonard Katana, the Nairobi Traffic Police chief said, “We have others in hospital, four of them with serious injuries.”

He said the cause of the accident had not been established, but witnesses said the bus may have been on a high speed and trying to avoid hitting another vehicle when it overturned.

Images circulating on social media showed passengers in blood-soaked clothes being rescued from the bus before police arrived.

Those injured were being treated at the St Mary’s hospital and others at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

“We are trying to establish the cause of the accident,” Katana said.

Lang’ata Road has several black spots, where fatal accidents occur nearly every week, according to police records.

At least three buses from the Rongai route have overturned on the notorious road since June last year, raising concerns on their safety record.

In August, a pupil from Victorian Academy, Meru died and several others were injured after a bus ferrying them to the music festival overturned on Lang’ata Road.
