LAIKIPIA, Kenya, Sept 19 – The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Monday began its month-long recruitment exercise for General recruits, Constabularies and Tradesmen/women that is set to seek eligible candidates to join the disciplined Forces.
According the requirements, candidates must be Kenyan citizens of between the age of 18 and 26 years old, being medically and physically fit according to the KDF minimum health standards.
In Nyahururu Sub County of Laikipia County, the exercise started in earnest as potential recruits turned up at the Nyahururu stadium albeit low as compared to other years.
At least 1,000 youths presented themselves for the exercise and before the recruitment would begin, candidates were cautioned to be wary of any person claiming to recruit or even issue any alleged calling letter outside the recruitment centre which the officials said would be treated as fraudulently acquired.
Head of the recruiting team in Nyahururu Lieutenant Colonel Edward Onyango said majority of the potential recruits indicated that they were ready and eager to join KDF.
He said, however, new administration units were posing a major challenge to the candidates since they were yet to establish which recruitment centres or divisions they were supposed to present themselves as registered in the National Identity Cards (IDs).

He said the matter will be looked at with the relevant ministries and hence the candidates have no cause to worry.
Colonel Onyango added that the no university graduates turned up for the exercise as has been in the case over the years noting that this was an indication that people were more informed and read the requirements as provided for in the advertisement made to that effect.
“Corruption, bribery and other acts of graft are against the law. All persons presenting themselves for recruitment purposes with fake/falsified documents or caught engaging in any corrupt activity shall be arrested and prosecuted,” he pointed out.
Recruits who spoke to the press described the exercise as free and fair saying majority of them were satisfied by the decisions made by the recruiting team.
Kevin Ndung’u aged 25-years would not forget today’s recruitment which he said was optimistic that he would join the forces.
However, he went home a discouraged man after he was shown the gate for the 5th time he has been trying his luck to join KDF.
For him, he has always made frantic effort to ensure he is counted among the lucky ones in the forces but as fate would have it; his dream never came to a reality and is now a dejected man.
This has been his dream job since his childhood.
The orphaned boy had high hopes to join KDF to support his aging grandmother who he was living with but will now be forced to look for an alternative opportunity.
Candidates who emerge successful shall be issued with calling letters immediately at the recruitment centres only by the recruiting officers.
