NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 9 – The Nairobi County Government is set to issue its inspectorate team with new uniforms in a bid to reduce incidences of impersonation and harassment of members of the public.
County Secretary Robert Ayisi stated that the new uniform should be worn at all times while on duty.
The announcement came after four people were arrested and charged with impersonating members of the inspectorate team and harassing the public.
“We want to make sure that our inspectorate uniforms change as part of the culture change. We are in the process of issuing our staff more so our front office staff like the inspectorate with an electronic card that uses bio data that shows that the owner of this card is the authentic owner,” he said.
“And for the uniform, we have presented it for gazettement and once it happens, then we shall make it public. It is different. It is not going to be the usual grey thing. The lower part if different, the upper part is different, the jacket is different,” he stated.
Ayisi further pointed out that each officer will be issued with a bio data card which will enable them to be identified. “The card can show you the bio data of the bearer.”
The inspectorate department, under which the notorious county askaris fall, has been blamed for tainting the image of the County Government.
The new uniforms will include numbers, similar to those of the police, identification badges and boots.
The inspectorate department is tasked with fire-fighting, enforcing city county laws.
Ayisi stated that human rights training for all askaris will be part of the reforms which are moving to training and rebranding.
The County Secretary said they will also partner with the National Police Service to recruit 650 new askaris before the end of this financial year.
Nairobi County has over 2,000 askaris and at least 200 are expected to retire by the end of this year.
