NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 4 – The National Civil Society Congress (NCSC) is calling for the establishment of a special Parliamentary Committee to investigate Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario following the Rio mess.

Speaking during a press conference on Sunday, the head of the organisation Morris Odhiambo stressed the need for MPs involvement in the probe, to compliment the police team that has been undertaking the probe.

“We call for a full parliamentary probe of the Rio scandal to be undertaken by a select committee of parliament side by side with the ongoing investigations by the DCI,” Odhiambo said.

Although Wario was questioned by police over the Rio mess, there has been no information on whether he was found culpable or not.

Three top officials of the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) are already facing charges over the matter while others are under active investigation.

On Sunday Odhiambo indicated that the probe should include among other things the use of public money for purposes other than the promoting of sporting interests among others.

“The issue of investigation goes beyond lost sports kits, inaccurate accreditation and fraud in ticketing. There are obvious cases of conflict of interest regarding those who travelled to Rio and the fact that public money could have been used for purposes other than promoting the sporting interests of the country. Thus, we suspect high levels of fraud,” he stated.

He also called on Wario to step aside pending the outcome of the investigations which has unearthed corruption on a grand scale in the management of sports in the country.

“We call upon the Cabinet Secretary Dr. Hassan Wario to step down with immediate effect since he is also among those who must face investigations,” he stated.

The investigation on the Rio mess was triggered by President Uhuru Kenyatta who vowed action against anyone found culpable.
