LAIKIPIA, Kenya, Sep 16 – Police in Laikipia West have arrested five suspects accused of stealing and slaughtering over 10 donkeys.

Those arrested include a woman, her two sons and two other suspects who were allegedly found slaughtering the animals at Ol-Jabet village on Thursday night.

Carcasses of over 10 donkeys were recovered, while others were lined ready for the knife.

Demand for donkeys has steadily increased in Naivasha, Nakuru and areas around Laikipia motivated by the opening of donkey slaughter houses in the region.

The abattoir which was opened in Nakuru recently is mainly for packaging donkey meat for export to China.

The sale of donkey meat is illegal in Kenya, although the meat is popular mainly in Naivasha, Laikipia and Turkana.
