NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 7 – Three people have been charged in a Nairobi court with conspiracy to defraud a city firm of Sh19.7 million.
Betty Wangui, Felix Kipyegon and Martin Mwangi however denied conspiring to defraud Capital Airtime Limited of the amount and unlawfully obtaining 200 iPhones by falsely pretending that they had won a tender from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo heard that the offences were allegedly committed between June 17 and August 20 with others not before court.
They also faced three counts of making a tender document without authority with intent to defraud for supply and delivery of iPhones.
It is alleged they made a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade purchase order dated August 3 for purchase of 200 pieces of iPhones purporting to be genuine purchase order from the ministry.
They were further accused of making two Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade letters between July 28 and August 3 2016.
Wangui separately faced an alternative count of handling stole goods and dishonestly receiving and retaining 40 pieces of iPhones knowing that they were stolen.
The three were not freed on bond after the prosecution indicated it intends to make an application before another court seeking to have them detained further to enable police conclude investigations for other related offences.
