NAIROBI, Kenya, August 10 – More than 10,000 primary school head teachers will be promoted this year.
Teachers Service Commission Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia says the government has set aside Sh2.2 billion for the promotions.
“The Commission in the year 2016/2017 financial year, has been allocated Sh2.2 billion for the promotion of teachers. Part of the funds will be used to promote 10,000 teachers who are currently in job group M and L,” she stated.
The TSC boss was speaking at the ongoing 12th Kenya Primary School Heads Association Conference in Mombasa.
“So in the next two months, we will advertise 6,000 jobs in job group M and 4,000 in L. A significant number of these positions will be set aside for teachers in primary schools and especially head teachers,” she said.
All the vacant positions for promotions will be advertised to help bridge the shortage of 87,000 teachers across the country.
The promotions come at a time when there has been an increased spate of arson cases in public schools countrywide as various institutions were razed down.
The head teachers on Sunday welcomed the directive by TSC to have them and their deputies to live in the schools following rampant cases of arson attacks that have hit secondary schools in recent days.
Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) National Chairman Shem Ndolo however stated that the government must put necessary mechanism on safety of teachers.
Ndolo indicated that the government must invest more on intelligence gathering to stop such and apprehend, prosecute individuals involved.
Speaking in the backdrop of annual KEPSHA conference in Mombasa Ndolo pointed out that cases of unrest in schools will be deliberated in the one week meeting to be attended by over 10000 primary heads.
