MACHAKOS, Kenya, Aug 19 – At least 650 people with eye problems received free treatment with 60 others having successful cataract surgeries during a clinic hosted by three specialist doctors from South Korea at the Machakos Level 5 hospital .
The team from the Vision Care Services was led by Dr Kim Dong–Hae and also included three nurses and four optometrists.
The free eye camp that ended yesterday saw the doctors use the phaco-emulsification technology to conduct the surgeries.
The hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Helen Nzuki termed the clinic a success and appealed to other medical agencies to support more camps to treat the less fortunate in society.
Dr Nzuki said that eye surgeries cost a minimum of Sh50,000 adding that the move by the Korean doctors to offer the service for free was noble .
“They have given a new lease of live to the people of Machakos,” said Dr Nzuki.
She said that all those who received treatment were offered free drugs for their ailments.
