NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 28 – President Uhuru Kenyatta and South African President Jacob Zuma Saturday held talks on regional security and bilateral issues.
The two leaders discussed the situation in South Sudan and how the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is navigating in trying to restore the path to sustainable peace.
They also discussed decisions taken at the African Union summit in Rwanda, and how to accelerate their implementation.
Presidents Kenyatta and Zuma met at Kenyatta International Convention Centre on the margins of the sixth edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).
They also discussed a host of issues of common interest to Kenya and South Africa, revolving around trade and deepening bilateral relations.
As a key step to enhance the existing relations between the two countries, President Zuma confirmed that he will make a State Visit to Kenya in October.
President Kenyatta also met President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and discussed ways of strengthening the African Union to boost the continental body’s capacity in dealing with issues affecting Africa.
They exchanged views on promoting agriculture where President Kenyatta informed his Zimbabwe counterpart on the critical contribution smallholders make to Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product.
Presidents Kenyatta and Mugabe also discussed regional security and the efforts IGAD is making in Somalia and South Sudan.
The two leaders agreed on the need to promote cooperation in building communications and infrastructure on the continent.
President Mugabe commended Kenya for hosting a successful TICAD and invited President Kenyatta to visit Zimbabwe.
