NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 27 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged leaders participating in the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to encourage their peers to uphold values and principles of good governance.

Saying Africa requires committed leadership to achieve its development goals, President Kenyatta emphasised that those who have been chosen to lead have a responsibility to entrench high standards of governance.

“At this meeting, in this venue, I ask you to re-commit yourselves to providing the leadership that Africans deserve,” said the President.

The President was speaking at a special APRM summit held on the side-lines of the sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) in Nairobi.

President Kenyatta pointed out that the current generation of African leaders need to rise to the challenge of good leadership which its people are yearning for.

He noted that the presence of leaders at the Nairobi special APRM summit is a proof of their commitment to improving good governance in Africa.

“This generation of leaders must rise to that challenge: we must show ourselves worthy of the responsibilities that our people have chosen us to undertake,” said President Kenyatta.

He added: “We have learned that continental unity and strong multilateral partnerships are the paths to fulfilling the potential of Africa and its people.”

The President said the APRM has been in the process of revitalising the self-evaluation process.

The revitalisation process is led by a committee comprising South Africa, Sudan, Chad, Rwanda and Kenya.

President Kenyatta thanked the committee for the tireless work they have done noting that “to be asked to advise the rest of the continent’s leaders on how they should conduct their business is to bear a heavy responsibility.”

Among the major strides made is the appointment of Chief Executive Officer Professor Edward Maloka.

He said Professor Maloka has a wide experience in public affairs and since his appointment much progress has been achieved.

“There are few Africans who have shown such intense dedication to good governance on the continent, and fewer still who can match his experience or education,” said President Kenyatta.

African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma thanked President Kenyatta for revitalizing the African Peer Review Mechanism which she termed as an important tool not only for democratization and good governance but also one which will help the continent achieve its development goals.

She said through President Kenyatta’s efforts, member states are now active in contributing funds and also agreeing to self-evaluation process which is steered by the organization.

At the summit, Mozambique submitted its second progress report on the implementation of the APRM national programme for action.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi highlighted achievements made by his government, including deepening of democratic processes in which the government held credible third municipal elections in 2013 and fifth presidential and parliamentary as well as provincial assembly elections in 2014.

He also pointed out that his government has been implementing its commitment on the ratification of conventions and international treaties on reintegration of former combatants and demobilized soldiers.
