NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 31 – The Nairobi County Assembly will debate impeachment Motions against Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Speaker Alex ole Magelo in two weeks time after the required signature threshold was reached.

A total of 65 Members of the County Assembly want Kidero to be sent home while 60 signatures were collected for those who want Magelo to vacate office.

A Motion of impeachment can only be moved after the collection of signatures from a third of the total number of Members of the County Assembly.

“Yes, that has happened but I can assure you that the Governor is not fazed. The motion against him is going nowhere,” an official close to Kidero’s office told Capital FM News when asked about the issue.

The Motions come hot in the wake of the controversy facing the opening of the new County Assembly chambers which aborted due to political rivalry between CORD and Jubilee MCAs.

Following the collection of the signatures, the two Motions were drafted but were put off for two weeks when they will be debated due to lack of quorum.

The stand-off at the opening started when Health CS Cleopa Mailu turned up but is understood to have been rejected by CORD Members of County Assembly.

And when Kidero offered to officiate the opening, the MCAs affiliated to Jubilee threatened to scuttle the event leading to the cancellation.

The County Assembly has a total of 127 Members of County Assembly, 85 elected and 42 nominated.
