NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 24 – Mugo wa Wairimu, a bogus doctor facing sexual assault charges, has been detained for 10 days for absconding trial and interfering with witnesses through social media posts.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo ordered Wairimu to be locked up until September 2 when he will rule whether or not to cancel his bail.

Wairimu failed to attend his trial on July 11 and the court issued a warrant for his arrest.

On Wednesday, the prosecution objected to the medical documents he adduced in court that he was sick on that day.

According to the prosecution, the hospital at which he was admitted is Milan Clinic which offers only maternity services.

The prosecution also claimed that the accused has been delaying the trial by making numerous applications and as such the prosecution wants him to attend his trial while in custody.

He was charged in October 2015 with 12 counts including rape, sedating his female patients and operating clinic without a licence.

The alleged doctor was arrested after a video recording believed to be of him sedating and raping a female patient at Prestige Clinic in Githurai 44 estate, Nairobi, circulated in the media.

He was out on Sh5 million bond.
