NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 18 – Kencom bus stop will be closed to the public when key roads are shut starting August 25 to 29, 2016 during the 6th Tokyo International Conference of Africa Development to be held in Nairobi.
The Security Head for the TICAD Conference Amos Gathecha says all roads near the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) – the venue for the conference – will be shut during the period.
“The traffic police officers have already talked to the matatu operators, they will use the service alongside Moi Avenue, to pick and drop passengers,” Gathecha said.
The roads affected during the period include Parliament Road, Taifa Road, Harambee Avenue and City Hall with those attending the event with their vehicles urged to get accreditation for their vehicles at City Hall.
“Accreditations are currently ongoing, we are urging all Kenyans interested in the event to apply for accreditation and also apply for their vehicle accreditation to avoid inconveniencies,” he cautioned.
Gathecha says ample security will be offered in major hotels within the CBD where the delegates will be staying.
“We have already about 60 hotels who have confirmed bookings we are ready to give security in all those hotels, the airport and other avenues where delegates will engage in,” Gathecha said at a news conference Friday.
About 35 African Heads of State have confirmed attendance to the conference with more expected to confirm.
“The security arrangement is different from what we had during the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) due to the number of presidents coming in. We are also working very closely with protocol so that we merge the protocol and the local security officers, the presidential escort unit is working on the details of how the presidents will be handled,” he explained.
Over 100 companies from Japan will be in the country to exhibit as part of the 4,000 delegates from Japan.
Kenya expects TICAD to inject Sh12 billion into the economy.
The conference will be held between August 27, 2016 and August 28, 2016.
This the first time the event is happening on African soil.
Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed says the conference is expected to double the gains made by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that injected Sh6 billion to the economy.
Over 60 business Memorandums of Understanding are expected to be signed during the conference.
“The conference will also have 73 side events organized by Japan-Africa Business Summit, World Bank, United Nations as well as the Africa Union and regional and international organisations,” Mohamed explained.
