MACHAKOS, Kenya, Aug 2 – Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has challenged the World Bank to assist counties in human resource and financial management training to equip staff with the required skills.
Mutua said the training was vital as it will lead to better utilisation of resources and initiation and completion of projects across counties.
“Devolution is doing wonders at the grassroots level and should be supported by all. Just look at the roads being upgraded and water projects completed,” said Mutua.
He said many counties had experienced hitches in financial management leading to wastage and delays in completion of key projects.
Mutua was speaking at his Machakos office during a meeting with senior World Bank officials led by James Brumby the Director, Public Service and Performance, Governance Global Practice.
Other World Bank officials present were Jens Kristensen, George Larbi and Christine Owuor.
The team toured the Machakos Level Five hospital and where they were impressed by the rehabilitation of the facility.
“The refurbishment and equipping of the hospital has improved standards in health care provision,” said Kristensen.
He said the World Bank was committed to partnering with Machakos County to implement various projects that will be of help to locals.
Mutua said that his government has embarked on rehabilitating all health centres and dispensaries to ensure that they offer quality treatment.
He added that the health facilities have also been equipped with adequate drugs adding no patients should be referred to a private chemist to purchase drugs.
Mutua said that his government has spent Sh2.5 billion on a comprehensive water program that will see over 400,000 homes equipped with clean piped water.
He revealed that the government has this financial year allocated an additional Sh1.5 billion to the water sector.
The World Bank team said the development strides being experienced in Machakos was a testimony that devolution can change the lives of the people especially in rural areas.
