NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 21 – Kenya’s former President Mwai Kibaki has been flown to South Africa for treatment.
Kibaki left for South Africa Sunday morning.
“He was accompanied by his doctor. We expect him to return soon, and Kenyans will be informed of his progress as appropriate,” a statement issued by State House said.
“We ask Kenyans to pray for him, and to respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time,” the statement added.
It’s understood that the former President was first taken to the Karen Hospital for treatment on Saturday before a decision was taken to fly him to South Africa.
The former President formally started work as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Special Envoy for Water in Africa in June.
The former President expressed hope that the initiative will ensure proper water governance processes in Africa.
He noted that progress in the sector will unlock Africa’s potential for faster job-creation, poverty eradication, and socio-economic growth and development.
His role among other goals includes drawing attention of Heads of State of governments and civil societies to the importance of sustainable management of the available water resources.
