NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 8 – A new opinion poll shows that Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua enjoys massive support to retain the seat if elections were called today.

The survey by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) Research shows that 81 percent of voters would re-elect Dr Mutua, while 8pc would vote for Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama as Governor.

Mutua’s rival in the past election Wavinya Ndeti only enjoys 5pc support.

Machakos Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala has 3pc in the Machakos Governor’s race.

In Nairobi, incumbent Governor Evans Kidero still enjoys relative support but is facing opposition from Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko.

According to the poll, Senator Sonko drew his support mostly from male voters, while Governor Kidero enjoys the support of female voters.

The findings show that 36 percent of voters would vote for Kidero while 30 percent would go for Sonko.

Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja, former Starehe MP Bishop Wanjiru and Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru stand at 3percent while Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa stands at a paltry 1pc.

In Kiambu County, Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu is emerging the favourite with 49 percent of voters saying they would elect him, while 22pc say they would vote for the current Governor William Kabogo.

Those opposed to Kabogo say they are not happy with the way the county is run.

The TIFA self-funded survey was conducted in the three counties between July 28 and 31.

In the Nairobi Senate race, incumbent Sonko leads with 39pc in a largely open field which has left 31pc respondents still undecided.

Nine percent of the respondents backed Nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro, 8pc said they supported Nominated Senator Beth Mugo, while 19 per cent said they would vote other candidates.

In the County Woman Representative’s contest, the poll suggests that 43pc of the registered voters in city are undecided on who should fill the seat currently held by Rachel Shebesh.

The poll indicates that Shebesh is lagging behind businesswoman Esther Passaris who she beat in the 2013 contest.

In the poll released on Monday, 28pc of the respondents said they would vote for Passaris if the elections were called today, while 20pc were in support of Shebesh.

Other aspirants for the Woman Representative’s seat were Wangui Ng’ang’a (2pc), Karen Nyamu (1pc), Sylvia Mingala (1pc), Millicent Omanga (1pc) and other aspirants (2pc).
