NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 19 – Machakos County doctors have called off their three week strike after negotiations between their union and a team set up by the Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua bore fruit.

Speaking to Capital FM News, Mutua says issues raised by the union which included promotion procedures had also been addressed.

“Upon negotiations, the doctors’ strike has come to an end. We have been able to address issues aired by doctors which include problems in promotion procedures which have been ongoing for the last nine years,” Mutua said.

Doctors in the county downed their tools three weeks ago accusing county officials of intimidation with pay, staffing and lack of equipment being a problem.

In retaliation, the County Government obtained orders from the Employment and Labour Relations court in Nairobi compelling them to end the strike and go back to work.

“We have indicated in the past that the Machakos government is a hostile employer and indeed they have proved to be hostile towards us. When it reaches a point where the employer takes the employee to court, it means the relationship is dead,” Harvey Mbithi, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union chairman for Lower Eastern said at the time.

With the strike out of the way, Mutua has urged public servants to go about airing their grievances in a more amicable way so that Kenyans are not barred from receiving public services that they are entitled to.
