NAIROBI, Kenya August 9 – Gender Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki is urging the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation leadership to work towards solving their wrangles.

Kariuki said whatever issues the organisation is facing must be solved while there are minute.

“The women movement of the country has been shaped and moulded by the leadership of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake… if you look at the 50 year old history, they have contributed what the women empowerment conversations in Kenya are,” she said.

This comes after Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation Chairperson Rahab Muiu was forced to lock herself in the office weeks ago after a group of angry women attempted to eject her accusing her of mismanagement and dictatorship.

Led by Nairobi County Chairperson Betty Miyandazi, they claimed that since Muiu’s election in 2013, the organisation has become “as good as dead” with nothing to show after spending a lot of time sourcing for money from donors and NGOs for her own interests.

“Rahab was imposed on us by the government; she did not competitively win the position she is currently boasting of,” Miyandazi said.

She said they do not have a voice anymore on matters of women because Muiu has never called county representatives to a meeting claiming all she does is to organise for a few chairladies to meet in posh hotels to squander money on non-issues.

Muiu was also accused of favouritism and nepotism in hiring staff at the head office.

The Cs was responding to this saying that the continued wrangles pitting the chairperson and a section of the members is affecting the operations at the association.

“All this should be stopped within the shortest time and they must be on their feet again,” Kariuki said.
