NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 30 – Eight Sunshine School students charged with arson and conspiracy to commit a felony have been allowed to go back to school.

The prosecution told a Nairobi Children’s Court that it was not ready to commence the trial as police are yet to serve the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with crucial exhibits.

Trial Magistrate Lucy Gitari allowed an application by the parents and the students stating that it is only fair in the interest of justice they be allowed to continue with their studies given that some of them are Form IV students.

Public schools re-opened Monday for the third term as tough measures to curb cheating in the national examinations came into effect.

The opening also comes as many schools grapple with the reality of massive damages on dormitories destroyed in arson attacks.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i had stated that there will be no half term breaks during the third term as it will be a period set aside to ensure students revise adequately for the upcoming examinations.

He had stated that third term for all primary and secondary schools will end on October 28 for Standard I to VII and Form 1 to 3.
