Parliament urged to hasten decision on fate of IEBC

This has raised concerns over how the commissioners will handle election disputes in view that the current commissioners will oversee the election and leave at a time of handling petitions of an election they supervised.

The credibility of the commissioners over allegations of corruption and mismanagement of the 2013 General Election has also been questioned, one of the main reasons sections of the country have called for their removal.

According to NARC Kenya Chair Martha Karua, no matter how much time is left before the General Election, current commissioners do not enjoy public confidence irrespective of allegations levelled against them.

“If there is loss of confidence by a majority of members of the public then you have no business remaining in office if you are honestly working for the public. They ought to have given way because it is very difficult to build public confidence once it has been lost,” she explained.

According to Karua, the date of election should not be affected by appointment of new commissioners since the bulk of election management is done by the secretariat.

Chiloba and Karua were speaking during IEBC’s public lecture on ‘securing the 2017 General Election’.

It is one of the forums that the commission plans to hold across the country to explain measures undertaken to address challenges faced in the 2013 general elections and other strategies adopted to ensure the 2017 General Election will be free and fair.
