Matiang’i wants parents charged for arson, vandalism in schools

He further noted that prayer days which had been cited as a cause of the unrest were moved to the second term to free up the exam period.

The CS said causes of school unrest include disharmony among teachers and the lack of commitment by managers.

“The management of schools has been hijacked by local politics and clanism. Are people burning schools so that documents are burned to avoid accountability?” he stated.

“Only offices and dormitories are being burnt. Why? Our quality assurance department has not been working as well as it should,” he noted.

Matiang’i said where preliminary investigations showed culpability, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has asked school heads to step aside.

“The TSC is investigating 15 school principals and their schools. We are implementing the new policy of delocalisation of school principals,” he said.

The CS emphasised that people behind the school unrests must face the full force of the law and indicated that a parents’ association by August 30 to help them engage better on the issue.

The worst case of the arson attacks this year was at Itierio Boys High School where seven dormitories were burnt in June.

On July 15, a dormitory at Kaimosi Boys’ High School was razed in a fire.
