The application deadline was extended by one day on Tuesday to make provision for the Eid ul-Fitr holiday on Thursday.

So far about seven people are reported to have applied for the post of Chief Justice.

Controversial U.S based law Professor Makau Mutua and former Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende and five judges had sent their applications by Wednesday seeking to succeed Dr Willy Mutunga as Chief Justice.

Supreme Court Judge Dr Smokin Wanjala, Court of Appeal Judges Alnashir Vishram and David Maraga, High Court Judges Richard Mwongo and Msagah Mbogholi were the judges whose applications had been received.

Lady Justices Martha Koome, Lydia Achode and Agnes Murgor were among the seven who had applied for the position of the Deputy CJ before the expiry of the deadline on Wednesday.

Moi University Law Faculty Dean John Chebii and High Court Judge Isaac Lenaola applied for the position of judge of the Supreme Court following the retirement of Philip Tunoi.

The CJ’s position fell vacant after Mutunga voluntarily retired on June 16 while the DCJ’s post fell vacant after the Supreme Court ruled that the Court of Appeal’s judgment that she should have retired in January on turning 70, stands.
