NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 14 – A terror suspect who had taken over Kapenguria Police Station was shot dead on Thursday afternoon, ending a nine-hour siege.

Police confirmed that the terror suspect was killed when an elite squad from the General Service Unit stormed the police station.

“The gunman has been killed and the siege is now over,” a police officer from Kapenguria said.

There was no immediate word on the exact number of other people, including police officers, killed or wounded during the delicate police operation that remained active from 5.30am.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet confirmed the end of the siege but did not given more details.

“The actual number and nature of casualties is yet to be established,” he said, explaining how a terror suspect who was in custody had grabbed a gun from a police officer at the crack of dawn.

“An individual who had been arrested for suspected terror links managed to grab a firearm from a Report Office officer and shot at several officers who were on duty,” the IG said.
