NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 5 – The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) is set to join the probe into the murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and a taxi driver.
This was revealed as the Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro who personally appeared in court Tuesday morning gave the assurance before Justice Luka Kimaru that they will complete the investigations within 14 days when four police officers will plead to the charges.
Muhoro was in court alongside the heads of the Serious Crimes Prevention Unit and Flying Squad who were called in to give a comprehensive update on the probe.
The DCI further stated that no external interference will be allowed during the probe which he stressed will be fair and just.
“I will ensure that there are complete investigations within 14 days. I will also make sure that there is no interference in the probe which will shed light on the murders,” he pledged.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) represented by lawyers John Khaminwa and Charles Kanjama however were of the opinion that the assurances given were not enough.
Khaminwa insisted that the services of a private investigator be solicited and that the High Court should have a supervisory role over the investigations.
He contended that the confidence of the public in the police had been seriously eroded and pointed out that having an independent body in the process was key to restoring belief in the police.
“Your honour, as LSK, we believe that the High Court can play a very crucial role in this process. We are not saying that it takes over the investigation but we want it to supervise the process so that public confidence can be restored,” he stated.
Justice Kimaru has now ordered that the post-mortem report on the bodies of the lawyer, his client Josephat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri be presented to the court Wednesday morning.
Already an autopsy on the bodies of the three has shown that they were tied up, some of their body parts chopped off before they were bludgeoned to death using blunt objects.
Another police officer was arrested over the murders Monday night, bringing to four the number of officers in custody so far.
Senior Principal Magistrate Joyce Gandhani ordered that Sergeant Leonard Maina Mwangi also be detained to allow police complete investigations into circumstance surround the death of the advocate, his client and a taxi driver.
The court ordered that the suspect be produced in court on July 18, 2016 when three other police officers are expected to appear before the Chief Magistrate’s Court.
