NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 5 – The Judicial Service Commission has extended the deadline for receiving applications to the position of Chief Justice from Thursday, July 7 to Friday July 8, 2016 at 5pm.
The one day extension is occasioned by the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday that falls on Thursday, “that would disadvantage applicants by shortening the application period by a day,” according to a notice by the Secretary of the JSC and Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi.
“The extension does not apply to the posts of Deputy Chief Justice and Judge of the Supreme Court whose deadline is Wednesday, July 6, 2016,” she explained.

An applicant for the position of Chief Justice is required to have been a Judge of the High Court or Court of Appeal for 15 years.
Those with 15 years experience of practice in Kenya or in any other country with a common law jurisdiction or Commonwealth country with a common-law jurisdiction are also eligible, besides other requirements listed in the advertisement.
“The JSC would like to assure applicants that the Commission is an equal opportunity employer and that the candidates will be selected on merit through a fair and open process,” Amadi said.
After Mutunga’s retirement, Justice Mohammed Ibrahim was named the acting President of the Supreme Court.
Mutunga was appointed the Commonwealth Special Envoy to the Maldives.
While delivering his farewell speech at the Supreme Court, Mutunga assured the country that there would be no crisis in the Judiciary.
According to Mutunga, the Judiciary Leadership Advisory Council which comprises the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Paul Kihara, High Court Principal Judge Richard Mwongo and the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Amadi are managing the operations of all levels of courts in the country.
