NAIROBI, Kenya Jul 5 – Forty civil servants drawn from different ministries are in China attending a training programme aimed at improving their skills and competence.

Speaking at an evaluation forum held at the Kenya School of Government ahead of the departure last week, China’s Ambassador to Kenya Dr Liu Xianfa noted the blossoming Sino-Kenya bilateral cooperation has been extended to critical areas.
“China is committed to share its development experience, ideas and technology to other developing countries through capacity building and training programs” he said.
Public Service Principal Administrative Secretary Grace Otieno, on her part said the 40 beneficiaries of China-sponsored training program are expected to champion reforms and quality service delivery in the civil service.
“The trainees will acquire critical skills while in China and we expect them to participate in design and execution of programs that advance transformation in the public sector once they come back,” Otieno said.
She commended the latest China-supported training program for Kenyan civil servants that will focus on public health and counter-terrorism.
“Training on anti-terrorism is particularly crucial as we deal with a menace that is a major threat to our security and economic growth. Likewise, civil servants trained on urban public health will help us deal with outbreak of contagious diseases,” she said.
Another official likened this Chinese gesture to the ‘1960 airlift of 800 African students to study in the United States’ that made Kenyan human resource among the best in Africa.
Chinese Ambassador Liu revealed that China will increase the number of scholarships for Kenyan public servants as the two countries deepen bilateral ties.
