MACHAKOS, Kenya, Jun 9 – President Uhuru Kenyatta begins a tour of Ukambani Friday, which will see him camp in the region for three days.

Preparations for the visit were in top gear with Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua meeting members of the Machakos, Kitui and Makueni County Assemblies and other stakeholders to fine tune the visit.

President Kenyatta will begin his three-day tour of Ukambani on Friday by commissioning various development projects in Machakos County, his first stop, where he will also address meet-the-people rallies.

Governor Mutua said preparations for the visit were complete adding that the region was enthusiastically waiting for the President.
“I personally wish to tell the President to feel at home in Ukambani. This visit will certainly align development and politics,” said Mutua.

Mutua invited the public, all elected leaders and aspirants to turn out in large numbers and give the President and his entourage a rousing welcome.

“I also urge Opposition leaders to exercise decorum during the visit and shun sideshows that may cast the region in bad light,” said Mutua.

In Machakos, the President is expected to commission the tarmacking of the Tala-Ndonyo Sabuk-Thika road.

The Head of State will then visit several development projects in Machakos.

He is then expected to visit Kitui County on Saturday before winding his tour of Ukambani in Makueni on Sunday.

MPs Itwiku Mbai (Masinga), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), Dr Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town) welcomed the President’s visit which they said will be used to keep tabs on his development promises.

“We as local leaders are happy and will also use the visit to ask for more goodies for our people from the national government,” said Mbai.

Munyaka said the region will benefit immensely from the politics of development which he said have overshadowed the politics of poverty perpetuated by some leaders for decades.

“We want to change the lives of our people and that can only be achieved by working closely with the national government which controls a large chunk of the national revenue,” said Munyaka.

Musyoka said the President was most welcome to visit Ukambani and will be warmly received.

“We have agreed to focus on politics that help our people leave the bondage of poverty and underdevelopment to prosperity,” said Musyoka.

He said leaders should strive to push for the development of their areas by capitalising on the presidential visit.

“The leaders should request the President to initiate or complete key projects since the national government has more resources. The politics of antagonism belong to another era,” said Munyaka.

Kitui County Assembly Minority Leader Alex Nganga and the Makueni deputy speaker Bernard Musau said the counties were ready for the visit which they said was a political game-changer.
