NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 3 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has been urged to personally lead talks with CORD over the electoral commission impasse in order to avoid the pitfalls that most world leaders have encountered after failing to deal with emerging crises in their countries.
Renowned author of best seller ‘The Trust Edge’ and a leadership speaker David Horsager who was this year’s keynote speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast, urged the President to take advantage of the reflective and reconciliatory nature of the event to reach out and engage CORD leader Raila Odinga and others who have raised concerns on the matter.
“You got to look at what you are putting in yourself, and this is the main problem for many in leadership around the world. We can often say that this guy came and talked about trust; I wish that, that person would have been here. What can you take out? he posed.
“I wish Odinga was here, I wish others were here, I wish we were all together, so we could all talk and all look and all say what can we do,” said Horsager.
The 14th annual inter-denominational prayer meeting was held under theme ‘Trust and the Critical Role it Plays in Leadership’.
Horsager held captive the gathering which included President Kenyatta, his deputy William Ruto, their spouses and MPs, industry sector captains and other guests as he shared his experiences of how trust and integrity are critical for a nation and its people to move forward.
He went on to highlight consistency, commitment, transparency and trustworthiness as among the key pillars of trust in leadership.
The motivational speaker further reflected on the discussions that came out of the national conversation – which is an open forum which takes place on the evening prior to the National Prayer Breakfast – where he noted that a lack of trust is the biggest expense that he noted among the participants.
“My fear is that there was too much thinking in the past and it is time to think about what we can do for the future. Think about this, if you put critique in, what will you get? My brother, a great economist, says today we are more critical than we have ever been, without the ability to critically critique.”
He continued, “leaders in this room, I can tell you if you want to be critiqued for a living, write a book, make a speech; or lead anything. So you have to do what’s right anyway, you will be critiqued. Input leads to output.”
The renowned leadership speaker called the congregation to be willing to trust those that are willing to sacrifice beyond themselves.
“Is it better to be trusted or trustworthy? It much better to be trustworthy. The most deceptive person is the one who looks trustworthy but in fact is not. My prayer for you is that you trust God enough to build trust with. Some of us don’t trust God enough to take a chance with others, you legacy is fully dependant on trusting God and being trustworthy,” he said as he concluded his 26 minute address.
