NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 15 – A scuffle between Mike Sonko and Evans Kidero on Wednesday forced a Senate Public Accounts and Investments Committee meeting to adjourn, after claims by the Senator that the Governor was “a murderer.”

The confrontation that started as a verbal altercation turned physical after Sonko tabled documents he claimed proved his allegations that Governor Kidero together with his Chief of Staff were complicit in the deaths of Nairobi residents.

Sonko, who was appearing as a friend of the committee, was angered when a presentation he made accusing Governor Kidero of illegally acquiring land was dismissed by Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong’are.

“This County Government has been taking away property belonging to the people of Nairobi. They give fake demands of rates and then grab the property. They then kill the people. I have evidence to prove all these. I am ready to file an affidavit,” Sonko charged.

The meeting was cut short when the two got into a verbal exchange in front of the committee that was questioning Kidero over the county’s financial spending for the 2013/14 financial year.

Sonko went ahead to cite an incident where he alleged that Kidero hired goons to forcefully evict a Nairobi woman from her Sh2 million property, after which the woman was mysteriously killed.

“One Mr Hawa took his wife to India for treatment. As he was in India, there was a fake rates claim that was raised by the county amounting to Sh6 million.

“He was willing to pay but when he came back, an eviction was carried out by the County Government and auctioneers. The family was thrown out and in the process the wife was killed,” Sonko claimed.

The Nairobi Senator alleged that he had medical reports to prove the claim, adding that he had more evidence to incriminate Governor Kidero.

However, Senator Mong’are directed him to withdraw his remarks noting that the statements were extreme but a defiant Sonko stood his ground.

Disorder started when Kidero began to respond to the Senator’s insults and Chairman of the Committee Anyang Nyong’o moved in to try and calm the situation.

“All of us are sitting very politely and listening to each other. That is what a meeting is about,” Nyong’o stated.

Kidero then requested for an adjournment to consult but Sonko interrupted him with accusations that he was a “murderer who hired goons to kill innocent Nairobi residents.”

Despite the committee being adjourned, the atmosphere remained charged and the two were involved in a brawl with Senators coming in between them.
