NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 29 – Investigations are ongoing into the cause of the fire the razed yet another dormitory at a school in Kisii County following Education Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s visit to the institution.

The fire at Naikuro Secondary school in Bobasi constituency is reported to have started at around 5am Wednesday morning when students went on the rampage to protest the two-week term extension announced by the minister.

Five students in the mixed school were arrested on Monday after they were linked to five litres of petrol found in the school.

They were released on Tuesday and according to the administration, the arson took place Wednesday morning after police officers who were manning the school compound left.

The incident comes even as the Education CS announced tough measures including arresting and charging those involved.

Matiang’i indicated that the move is aimed at quelling turmoil and anarchy in schools.

His sentiments follow a closed-door meeting with education stakeholders and while describing arson as a criminal activity, Matiang’i emphasised the need for sanity to be restored in schools.

He has now instructed all schools boards to call meetings to assess the situation in their schools and give him a report.
