Opposition refuses to call cease fire until talks kick off/ FILE
NAIROBI, Kenya, June 1 – The Coaliton for Reforms and Democracy and KANU insist that they will continue in their push for a change of guard at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through mass action should the proposed talks between themselves and the National Government fail to take root.
Speaking during a CORD rally at Uhuru Park on Wednesday, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula however said the coalition would release the names of its representatives, to meet government officials, on Thursday.
Wetangula indicated that during talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House on Tuesday, it was agreed that teams from both sides should be formed to dialogue on the issue.
“During our meeting with the President at State House, we agreed that there will be teams formed to discuss the issue regarding the IEBC. We will form our team by tomorrow (Thursday) and that team is due to meet with the one formed by the government so that we can dialogue on the IEBC issue,” he said.
CORD leader Raila Odinga echoed his sentiments and stated that when they appointed IEBC commissioners in the grand coalition government, they did not know about the scandals following them.
“When we appointed the Commissioners with the Grand Coalition government, we did not know about Eurobond or the Chicken Gate scandal. Now we have realized all our mistakes and all of them must now go home,” he said.
But speaking at Afraha stadium, President Uhuru Kenyatta maintained that he was ready for dialogue but CORD must follow the law.
